Comparison: iPhone 13 vs iPhone 14
The new iPhone 14 utilises the same processor as the previous model for the first time ever. When you add that to the nearly same cameras and comparable design, Apple might as well have called this the iPhone 13S.
It’s crucial to understand that the iPhone 14 feels different since in the past, Apple made more significant improvements to its new iPhone every year. But it’s not like Apple as a company suddenly stopped innovating. We still have the Dynamic Island, an Always-On display, a new and more potent A16 CPU, and more capable cameras, but… none of that is present on the iPhone 14! Only the Pro and 14-inch iPhones may use it. What exactly differs between the iPhone 13 in the iPhone 14? Should you even think about upgrading?
What has changed in the iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 cameras?
The iPhone 13 has two 12MP wide- and ultrawide-angle cameras, and it was first released in 2021. While the ultrawide lens takes four times more pictures of the scene, the regular camera benefits from a new sensor that lets in 47% more light than the one inside the iPhone 12. Apple enhanced that camera’s low-light performance as well.
Apple increased the main camera’s sensor size from 1.7 mm to 1.9 mm for the iPhone 14. Additionally, that lens’ f/1.5 aperture is quicker than f/1.6. Apple claims that these adjustments result in improved action photographs and ongoing progress in low light. The iPhone 14’s ultrawide angle camera, like that of its predecessor, is designed to capture more of a scene and perform better in low light.
Apple changed a few things with the iPhone 14 after years of letting the front camera alone. Both the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 have a 12MP TrueDepth camera, although the iPhone 14’s aperture is smaller at f/1.9 as opposed to f/2.2. The iPhone 14 will be able to let in more light as a result. Additionally, Apple added focusing to the iPhone 14’s TrueDepth camera.
iPhone 14 vs. iPhone 13: Design
With a few minor variations, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 feature remarkably identical designs. When you set the iPhones on a table, the iPhone 14 will be slightly less flat than the iPhone 13 because of the modifications made to the rear cameras, which protrude a little bit further on the back of the iPhone 14. A cover for an iPhone 13 won’t likely fit an iPhone 14 because the buttons have also been significantly moved.
The two phones also differ in terms of the available colour finishes. The colours of the iPhone 13 are often darker than those of the iPhone 13. As opposed to the deep blue of the iPhone 13, the iPhone 14 offers a pastel blue alternative, and even the Product Red finish for 2022 appears brighter than normal. Purple has been substituted for pink as well.

Apple employing largely the same A15 Bionic chip on the iPhone 14 as it did on the iPhone 13 series is the big news—or rather, lack thereof. It isn’t exactly the same arrangement, though. This is your consolation prize because the A15 processor in the iPhone 14 is a direct port from the 13 Pro, which features a 5-core GPU that offers a 20% performance gain.
The iPhone 14’s CPU performance is exactly the same as that of the phone’s earlier model. Gamers will, however, be pleased to see the figures the iPhone 14 can crunch thanks to the powerful 5-core GPU. In 3D Mark, the initial performance has improved by 28%, and even after 20 minutes and some throttling, the GPU performance is still nearly 24% better.
Safety features in the iPhone 14 vs. iPhone 13
The iPhone 14 includes two additional features that the iPhone 13 does not, albeit one of them will only be important to you if you live in the United States or Canada and the other will only matter if you are involved in a car accident. The first is the newly developed capability to call emergency services through satellite. If you are in difficulty and don’t have cellular coverage, you will still be able to do so as long as there is clear enough sky above you. Although you probably won’t need it, it may make a significant difference if you found yourself in a similar scenario.
The Crash Detection feature, which is also present on every 2022 Apple Watch, is a similar capability that you may never require, but which has the potential to save your life. When you are in a traffic accident, the iPhone 14 can actually detect it and will call emergency services on your behalf.
