Many Mac users are still unaware that their hard drive or SSD can be upgraded, and they believe that in order to have more storage, they must buy a new Mac. Although this is becoming increasingly true for newer MacBook Pro and MacBook Air laptops, the SSDs and hard drives in nearly all Apple iMac and Mac Pro desktops can still be upgraded. Furthermore, if you own a 2016 or older MacBook Pro or a 2017 or older MacBook Air, you can increase your internal storage capacity to 2.0TB. You don’t even need to be an Apple technician to upgrade safely; you can do it yourself.

The upgrade is far less complicated than you might think. Some MacBook models have an SSD or hard drive that can be upgraded, while others do not because the SSD is soldered to the motherboard. We have classified MacBook models accordingly in the table below, along with price details for SSD upgrades. All SSD replacements will come with a one-year warranty.

Install a solid-state drive (SSD) in your MacBook Pro.

To install an SSD in your MacBook Pro, you must first obtain one. There are several types to choose from, so do your research and select the SSD that best meets your budget, speed, and capacity requirements.

  • Install screws on the sides of your SSD to secure it to your MacBook. These screws are usually available from an old hard drive.
  • Connect the SSD to the black bar (also known as the ribbon cable connector). Check that the connector is securely inserted and that the cable is not twisted.
  • Insert the SSD by inserting one side first, then the other.
  • Reinstall the bracket and tighten it down with Phillips screws to secure the SSD.
  • Before replacing the bottom cover, make sure the SSD is operational (recommended). Flip the MacBook over and press the power button. If the standard startup chime sounds, the installation was successful. A sound of shattered glass could indicate that something went wrong, and you should reinstall the old hard drive to determine whether your device was damaged.
  • Replace the bottom cover and tighten it down. Before using your MacBook, make sure the screws are nice and tight.
